A Guide to Patient and Family Engagement in Hospital Quality and Safety

Research shows that when patients are engaged in their health care, it can lead to measurable improvements in safety and quality. To promote stronger engagement, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality developed the Guide to Patient and Family Engagement in Hospital Quality and Safety, a tested, evidence-based resource to help hospitals work as partners with patients and families to improve quality and safety.

The Guide can help hospitals achieve meaningful results. The results show that implementing recommended strategies led to tangible benefits for hospitals overall, including improved patient survey scores, improved nursing time management and accountability and positive staff experiences. Benefits for patients and family members included improved experiences of care, particularly due to better communication and information-sharing. Presenters on this webinar from Patewood Memorial Hospital and Advocate Trinity Hospital highlighted their successes and results from implementing specific tools from the Guide.
